Branding
Branding is a term we use to mean an identification that can be fixed and consistent in the mind of clients. You hear the word, “Toyota,” and you think of a company, a product and a standard. Our brand or nick-name is “DRSDI".
Browser
In web design context a browser is a software application programmed to receive and present a wide range of information and applications to any one anywhere. Often this information is sent over the World Wide Web for viewing on a local browser.
Buttons
When we in the web design business refer to buttons, we do not mean what holds your shirt together at the front, but images of various shapes, sizes and colors invisibly programmed using hyperlinks to get you to where you want to be or to perform some action you want.
Coding
In website design, coding is referring to the programming that enables a page to be developed so it is visible after sending to a web browser in any part of the world. There are many different coding languages.
Copyright
Copyrights are used for items tangible as well as intellectual property. In the Website context it declares the moral rights of the creator of a work, such as the right to be credited for the work. All material on the World Wide Web is considered copyrighted. You can strengthen your case against someone copying from your website by putting a copyright message on your page. Many sites allow you to freely copy from them. This will be stated in a clear manner. If you want to use material from other sites, you should contact the owner for permission.
CSS
Cascading Style Sheets (Abbreviated “CSS”) is a modern style sheet language used to control the styling and presentation of your web site. CSS is used to describe the look and formatting of a document written in a markup language. Most commonly, web pages are written in HTML, XHTML or XML. CSS can allow the same markup page to be presented in different styles for different rendering methods such as on-screen, mobile, cell-phone, printer friendly versions, handicap readers, etc.
Design/Develop
There is a difference between a Web Designer and a Web Developer. A Web Designer visualizes and lays out the design of the web site. The Developer is the one who optimizes the graphics and writes the code for the site in a way that a variety of web browsers can place on anyone's monitor what the Web Designer visualizes. Different web languages are used for this, with some form of HTML or XHTML normally being the back bone.
DRSDI
DRSDI is an acronym for D.R.S.Design Inc. You might say our brand or nick-name is “DRSDI". We are a small corporation specializing in affordable Web Design and Development. DRSDI does professional work at very affordable rates.
Favicon
A favicon is a tiny image, 16x16 pixels, used to set your web site apart from most others. Advanced sites used by big companies will normally have one that may be their brand or very simple as GM for General Motors. We use DRS, as they are so small DRSDI would not be readable. They appear on the URL line of the browser. We also use favicons in other strategic locations. Because they are so small they require special intricate individual pixel designing.
Fixed buttons
Fixed in web design means it will always retain the same place in the browser window. We use this feature to hold certain important buttons in a fixed location on your screen while you scroll the contents. We also like to use it to hold the background stationary, but you may have other preferences.
HTML & XHTML
HTML is an acronym for HyperText Markup Language, which is the predominant markup language for web pages, although professionally we use XHTML, which is the next step up. These provide a means to describe the structure of text-based information in a document. This consists of text coding, with certain text as links, headings, paragraphs, lists, etc. Text is supplement with interactive forms, embedded images, and other objects. HTML is written in the form of "tags" that are surrounded by angle brackets, that describe, to some degree, the appearance and semantics of a document, and can include embedded scripting language code. The Extensible Hypertext Markup Language, or XHTML, is a markup language that is advanced, but uses the same depth of expression as HTML as well as conforming to Extensible Markup Language (XML) syntax.
Hyperlinks
In web design, hyperlinks are used to get your from one place to another. Often the word is shortened to "links". Hyperlinks are what enable hypertext. This form of programming can be used with a button or a portion of text. The text is especially marked, often in blue and/or possibly underlined. Then you click on these "hot" spots and you are taken some place else that the programmer thinks you want to go. The browser responds to your input and takes you there. If you don't go anyplace the link is called dead. Such should be reported to the Webmaster. This can happen as a result of changes made someplace else, usually.
IE 8
Windows Internet Explorer (IE) is the most commonly used browser, but in the past they have not practiced strict adherence to the W3C standards. The reason for such programming was possibly to influence the standards for the WWW. Older versions were very susceptible to invasion by enemy forces. IE 8, refers to the new version as of 2009. Any that insist on using IE, should update to the latest version immediately. It is not totally stable, but is much better and safer than older versions.

IP Address
An IP Address is referring to "Internet Protocol Address" stored as binary numbers used to identify the name, address and path in a computer network following the Internet Protocol for communications. Your website will have an IP address whether it is static or dynamic.
Liquid background
A liquid is defined as a fluid that will flow out to the confines of the container. In web design it is in reference to designing so the site will flow out to the size of the container, in this case the monitor or more precisely the browser window. "Liquid background" refers to the background flowing out to fill the browser window.
Meta Tags
Meta Tags consist of Meta elements used in HTML or XHTML programming languages to provide structured meta-data about a Web page. Such elements are placed as tags in the head section of an HTML or XHTML document. Meta tags can be used to indicate page description, keywords and any other meta-data not otherwise provided.
MS Windows
MS Windows refers to MicroSoft's operating system commonly used today. The term is often used as compared to the Apple Inc.'s Macintosh, commonly referred to as a "Mac." We do our main testing on both.
Operating systems
There are many operating systems for computers. Many personal and business computers today use Microsoft Windows or Apple Inc.'s Macintosh often referred to as a "Mac." We do our main testing on both.
Organic Search
Organic robotic search results are naturally found listings in search engine results pages that appear because of their algorithms and your website relevance to the search terms. This is connected to relevant links. An organic search is in contrast to human submissions to search engines or advertisements.
Ranking
Page ranking is referring to a measure of the relative importance of your website in relation to other websites that use the same keyword or words. The higher your rank, the nearer the top you will be in search results. The term "PageRank" is a trademark of Google, but there are other ranking systems such as Alexa web ranking system.
Search Engine
Search engines, such as Google, are organizations involved in the search for information on the World Wide Web. This is accomplished by robots, sometimes called web crawlers or spiders. When this information is gathered it is sorted and tabulated in a database. Some search engines are designed for specific fields such as news, images, maps, etc., while others cover a broader spectrum.
Site
In the web design business, the word "site" is often used as an abbreviation for Website, normally a creation with a Domain Name and an IP address.
Site-map
A Site Map is a page that lays out the whole web site. It will list all the pages and may have links to individual items on each page. The search engine's robots look for this page on every web site to find and analyze each of those pages.
URL
URL means a Uniform Resource Locator that specifies where an identified resource is available and the mechanism for retrieving it. For our purposes a URL refers to a Web address such as http://drshenton.ca/pages/webdesign.html which is the route to take you to our web site design services.
URL line
The URL line is the line in your browser near the top where you put in the address, meaning the URL of the website you want to view. URL means a Uniform Resource Locator that specifies where an identified resource is available and the mechanism for retrieving it. For our purposes a URL refers to a Web address such as http://drshenton.ca/pages/webdesign.html which is the route to take you to our web site design services.
W3C's standards

Webmaster
The webmaster often refers to the website administrator. He/she is responsible for designing, developing, marketing, and maintaining a website. The Webmaster is able, on a community web site, to change and manipulate any comment that the users submit and publish it to the WWW. Similarly, he/she is the person responsible to a company or an individual to do the same work.
Website window
In computer language, a window is the area you are viewing your target in. A window can be maximized to the size of your monitor, or minimized to any size you want to view. The website window is the size your browser is displaying.
WWW
World Wide Web (abbreviated “WWW”, "the Web” or “W3”) is the entirety of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet, commonly referred to as “the net”. With a Web browser, free of charge, anyone in the World who has Internet access can view Web pages.

Our "Bells and Whistles" for You

Favicons for Branding
A favicon is what you see in your URL line at the top of a browser when you load a million dollar site. Yes, many of them are that much and some many times more. A favicon sort of stands for your "favourite Icon" and sometimes called a web icon or URL icon. It is associated with your website and can be like a brand. Branding is important for good search engine ranking. The favicon is not only used in the URL, but most browsers will show it in the tabs also. Most "favourites" lists will show it also. We sometimes strategically use favicons in place of a bullet marker for lists. A favicon is a tiny image, 16x16 pixels, so requires special intricate individual pixel designing.
404 Error Page
A custom made 404 Error page is a very important extra. When someone types an error in the URL line of the browser, this error page will show up. Try typing or pasting in your web browser URL line the following. Notice the spelling is wrong: http://drshenton.ca/pages/webquestionnnnfaq2.html The 404 Error page appears. Notice you can now click on the link you want and go directly there. This is so much better than the default 404 Error that says something like, "The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable." This is likely to be followed by an advertisement for the hosting company. The interested searcher is none the wiser as to how to find your special page.
Strategic Buttons, always visible
We design for fixed buttons always, at the top left and right hand corners of your website window. They stay there as you scroll down. The top left side button can be used to take your viewer directly to the Top of the Page or to your home page; which ever you prefer. The top right side button can be used to take your visitor directly to the Index or Site-map. I wondered for a long time why this feature wasn't more common on websites. When working on the Doulas' site, http://doulas3es.ca/, I was so pleased with the attitude of the client I wanted to do a little extra. I decided to develop a simple version of this feature as a free perk for others. In the developing I found out why most designers do not include such. It is an extremely difficult item to have working and looking right on all browsers and versions of browsers.
This site looks best in any browser
We design for "all browsers and versions of browsers" and claim, "This site looks best in any browser." There are some real far out browser challengers to this claim. To do them justice would require a switch able design for each. This is not necessary, because only one in a million uses such and they are familiar with the type of viewing it provides. Your site will still be very viewable and meaningful in these "odd ball" browsers.
Fixed design for predictability
We normally do fixed width design, at whatever width you desire. We recommend 780 pixel wide for the business part and a liquid background that expands to any sized window. We can do the total design "liquid" if required, but results can get a bit uncertain when designing for all browsers and their many versions complicated by the vast range of monitor sizes available.
Warning messages for the outdated
On every page, to aid the viewer's experience, we put notices that only come up when a certain condition is present. If Script is needed and not running there will be a notice to this effect. We design and develop for "All Browsers", but have a notice for people running older Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers. This is for their good, as any version before IE 8 is full of security holes… as an expert said, "More holes than Swiss cheese."
Coding and Meta Tags
D.R.S. Design Inc. practice clean and orderly coding in all their work, paying special attention to the many possible Meta Tags the robots look for. These will be tailored especially for you. Some will be displayed by the search engine, when someone does a search and your site comes up.
Validated web design
We design and develop for 100% validation by the W3C's standards for web design. This standard is now accepted universally. It is a very time consuming process, but pays off in loading speed as well as search engine response and ranking.
Provision to check for yourself
Buttons are added at the bottom of the page for easy checking of your site's validity. DRSDI mainly design using html or xhtml and css programming so the main buttons are W3C HTML 1.0 and W3C CSS. Check out other sites by these standards and you are likely to find many errors in them. Copy and paste their URL into the window provided by W3C. Regardless of the programming language they use, the checker will switch to that language standard and give you the report.
Why do I get a warning when validating?
When you do a validation check by W3C standards you are likely to get a warning that reads, "Passed, 1 warning(s)". The reason is that UTF-8 encoded files did cause problems for some old text editors and browsers. It is well supported now, so there is no reason to worry. This is the encoding we normally use and consider best.
Checking, checking, checking
We spend much time on each page checking and re-checking layout, links, wording, grammar, spelling, validating, re-validating, as well as actual viewings in MS Windows and Macintosh operating systems and the many different browsers with the various versions there-of. Many design only for Microsoft's Internet Explorer, because it reaches 50% of the viewers. This is easy, but the problem is this 50% are the less literate computer users. Depending on the clientele you are hoping to reach, these may not include all your future prospects.
Auto-update for your copyright
We offer a copyright feature that will auto-update for the year, every year. The actual feature can't be installed until the first year has passed, or the script would leave a visible message that looked like, "Copyright © 2009-2009 Doulas3Es.ca All Rights Reserved". We may need a reminder, but after the first year we can add script enabling each page to auto-update. Now it will look like "Copyright © 2009-2012 Doulas3Es.ca All Rights Reserved," for viewers every year, not just in 2012!
Website submission to search engines *
Upon request we can submit your site to the main search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc. This is of questionable value, because many, such as Google, prefer to find you naturally. This is called an Organic Search as compared to your site being submitted by a human.
Logo on the background *
We can put your logo into the liquid background as you will see in DRSDI.ca, Doulas3Es.ca, etc. This is extra work, but most would consider it worth while. If you don't have a logo we can design one for you. We also design business cards.
Site-map or Index *
Every website should (must) have a Site-map. Many designers do not bother with it, but this is a mistake. The web crawlers look for this, so it can help your ranking and ultimately being found. Depending on the number of pages, we can possibly include this as a bonus.
Action, visual and sound *
We can put a little action into the page if you want it. This can include Multi-Media action and sounds or special designed simple action like we have on our pages.
What else do you want? *
We can do anything you see on the WWW, but some of it could cost mega dollars. On the other hand, it could be an added freebie. Let us know what you like. We aim to please.

* If requested, the starred items may be invoiced.
